RETRO TRENDS THAT WILL BE AMPING UP YOUR WARDROBE

by Farirai Macheka

What comes around goes around. We don't mean it in that spiteful sense. One thing that we have learnt about the fashion world is that it evolves- it comes in cycles. Something that was relegated to the fashion dust will come back as a cool must have. We have witnessed the resurgence of trends from yesteryear, re-emerging with a vengeance, albeit with some iterations.

Do you remember those flared or billowy pants, more generously proportioned and affectionately named ‘Revolution’ by our parents? Whenever your mom whipped that photo album and showed off how your daddy used to dress up in the bygone years, somehow you would fall of your chair laughing. Well have we got some news for you. The wide legged pants are back. They have been updated in style to cater for all age groups. The wide legged trousers also cater for all body types and are comfortable and sophisticated.

Cutting off you denim pants and turning them into shorts might have earned you a name akin to ‘penny - pincher’ but no worries. While it looked economical and totally uncool let's just say please share the crystal ball that showed you the future. Kudos for possessing that foresight to upcycle your denim pants to get more wears as shorts, before donating them or chucking them in the dumpster. The raw edged shorts are in and they are trendy. For those chill weekends, pair them with a statement tee or tank top then finish off the look with round framed glasses.

Skinny jeans are not the only ones enjoying their moment on the clothing rails. Popularised by the original style icons (moms) mom jeans are backs folks!! I’m sure you know the type by now? These ones are high-waisted, loose fitting leg and tapper just enough to roll then a bit. Did we mention that the silhouette makes them the most comfy but stylish, taking your outfit to the next level. To create an effortless edgy look rock them with a cropped Tee, ankle boots and a denim or leather jacket for that rebellious look- cinch the waist with a statement belt. Some might object, if you want to add that cool factor to the jeans a few rips will amp up the mom jeans. You don't have to be a mom to wear them. They are timeless and can be worn by anyone - from X to Z generation.

Feeling nostalgic? In case you haven't caught on, tie-dye is back. It comes in tees shorts jogger pants, jackets and these iterations make us swoon in a major way. There are different patterns and color stories for everyone, giving a fresh look to the trend.

If you are conflicted between whether to discard or keep, we have the answer for you, - it’s a definite, ‘keep’ . Yes we are talking about that pair of round framed glasses. Making their debut in the 1920s, they were popularised in the 70s by the late Beatles lead, John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono. Include this accessory to your collection of sunglasses. They have mounted a full take over, giving us a glimpse into the future. Known to sunglasses connoisseurs as tea glasses, they are associated with people who have a streak of rebellion (Samuel L Jackson, Johnny Depp, Elton John) and dance to the beat of their own drum

These are trends that some of us thought that they will not be rebirthed they literally rose from the ashes and are on every IT personality's feed. They are proving us wrong as they have slowly creeped back in the main stream fashion and are perfect for summer. What are the other fashion items that are not in this article but are making a comeback.
