Creative Ways to Style Your Bed

By Farirai Macheka

Well you do not need to wait for your next vacation or checking in a several thousand RTGS dollars room to have that 5 star hotel bedroom feel. To set your mind at ease here are some charming and affordable bedroom decorating ideas and DIY bedroom decor that won’t break your budget! The aim should be to achieve 'casual elegance' and if you follow the directions in this article, it’s easy to implement.

Your bed is the heart of your bedroom decor, and it’s the first thing you should tackle when decorating this space. Pick a bold design that makes the bed the focal point then build up the theme around the bedding design.

Cushions are still an essential for a super stylish bed. But how many? Three is a magic number in styling, or certainly an odd number, and maybe stick to under six in total for a King or Queen and three for a Single bed. Mix cushions in different shapes, colours, designs and textures for a current look, and display in a non-uniform arrangement. Cushions are also a great way to position design elements or colours. Invest in cushion covers that you can change seasonally to avoid having to spend too much.

Reversible duvet

The duvet cover is a great way to bring in some colour or pattern on an otherwise neutral bed. A current trend in bedding is reversible duvet covers and mixing prints. This not only provides two options for the main design on show – you can change the look as often as you want – and it adds a fantastic additional feature to a bed when the top of the duvet cover is turned down. A bedspread can not only inject a strong colour element into the focal point of the room (the bed) but it's also a great instant decor update for the bedroom.

It turns out there is an art to using throw blankets in the bedroom and on the edge of the bed Add one of those amazing textured throw blankets to your bed. Throws are still a great styling device for beds, but ensure it's not too neatly folded along the bottom of the bed. Throws should look more informal, casually draped over the corner of the bed.

Pillow Talk

The most common question asked with regards to styling a bed is whether pillows should be above the duvet or tucked underneath. Well, they should be on top. Pile on the pillows, and don’t shy away from mixing patterns. Combine large prints with small ones, florals with geometrics.

Bed Skirts

The bed skirt is only absolutely needed if you are covering up a frame, or if you want to use it to cover the space under the bed. Bed skirts come in a variety of styles and can offer another useful way to bring additional pattern, colour and texture to the decor style of the bedroom.

Make your most personal space even more so with artwork that you love, whether photographs or paintings. You can hang wall art in the bedroom. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and in fact you may already own photos or prints that just need new frames or mats.
