The Timeless Denim Jacket

If ever there was an item of clothing that has stood the test of time, it has to be the denim jacket. Popularly known as the ‘jean jacket’, it has not changed since Levi’s started producing denim in the early 1900s. Stone-washed, indigo or acid wash, slim fit or boxy, the denim jacket is in demand. Everyone should own a denim jacket but the key is to find one that suits you. The best feature is not its durability or rugged yet chic look, it’s the versatility. Denim jackets are the best because you can wear them with literally anything. They usually lend a casual vibe to any outfit, but they can also be dressed up a little bit. They’ll keep you warm without suffocating you, and they don’t cover up the rest of your cute outfit – in fact, they can usually make an outfit even cuter. Take advantage of the awesomeness of your denim jacket with the style tips below. You can wear it through summer and the chillier days of winter. And, yes, you can pair it with jeans. Here are five tips on how to wear a denim jacket that you’ll love.

Hard and Soft
Wear the jacket with ultra-feminine pieces. Long, flowing dresses and skirts match surprisingly well with denim jackets. The contrast between something undeniably girly and something somewhat boyish creates visual interest. When choosing a dress or skirt, look for one that drapes well and has an airy aura to it. A knee-high skirt can work just as well as a maxi skirt. Alternatively, you could also wear your denim jacket with a structured mini skirt. Miniskirts are usually feminine enough to hold their own against boyish denim, regardless of whether they are structured or flowing. Wear girlish accessories with this look when possible. The balance between girly and boyish should still tilt more to the girly side, and accessories are a good way to accomplish that. Think along the lines of flirty shoes and jewellery.

Denim with Denim
The trick for getting denim with denim right is all in the pieces you choose. Nobody wants to look like they just stepped straight out of the 80’s or 90’s as an updated feel is a must have for any trend. When it comes to double denim, less isn’t more really. Just make sure that the washes and colours are completely different from each other. This means pairing a light washed blue denim jacket or shirt with dark blue, black or grey jeans. You can do it the other way around with dark washes on top and lighter on the bottom, but I find that it looks better the first way as darker colours are more slimming on the bottom, creating a much nicer illusion to your proportions.
To cover another basic, you want to make sure that your pieces fit you perfectly. Pairing together a really baggy pair of jeans and an ill-fitting shirt is not a good look, neither is the combination of a baggy denim jacket and bad fitting jeans. The key here is making sure your jeans are slim or skinny and your shirt, jacket or vest is fitted. You need to make sure the cuts are slim, especially on the legs. I don’t think double denim ever looks good with really loose jeans, it’s much more suited to skinny fits.

Rule number one when it comes to pairing pants with a denim jacket: It’s all about contrast. Forget this rule and you’re at risk of just being ordinary. We love the denim-jacket-and-chinos look. You can rock the feminine version with a pair of tan pants.

Keep it simple. Keep it stylish.
