Do's and Dont's of Wide Leg Pants

3 October 2016

Relaxed, easy and cool are the three attributes that pretty much define what an ideal summer wardrobe should be all about. Before the skinny revolution, the dominating trend was wide leg pants and they are back with a bang.  The tailored and classic garment gives you a silhouette that is bound to turns heads all the same. High waisted or low slung, this trouser trend is the most convenient yet trendy must-have this summer. It’s perfect for the office when paired with a button-down shirt, and still rocks for date night with a silk camisole and clutch. It’s a trend that many have been sceptical about as the oversize shape of the trousers may be difficult to style, but after you read this, you should be able to wear those wide leg pants any day.

Do: Go High Waist
There's nothing chicer (and easier to style!) than a pair of high-waisted trousers and tucked-in top. Blouse or T-shirt, this look will take you from the office to after-hours drinks and is flattering on nearly every body shape.

Do: Wear them with flat shoes
The key to wearing wide leg pants with flats is to make sure your pants are tailored well. The hem of your pants should just barely skim the ground, allowing the toe of your shoes to be visible. (For an even more fashion-forward take, try hemming your pants about an inch above your ankle.)

Do: Crop it at night
Pair fluid ankle-length trousers with a silk camisole and cropped jacket or blazer. Finish your date night look off with a pair of strappy heels or sandals.

Do: Suit it up.
Use the wide-leg silhouette as a way to update your suiting, whether you're headed to the office or out at night. It's an easy way to stand out in a classic style - just add a matching blazer and you’re good to go.

Do: Long- line Jacket
When choosing a jacket to pair with your trousers, opt for a long-line blazer or jacket that lengthens your torso in the same way that your suiting trousers elongate your legs. The effect is a longer silhouette.

Do: Try white.
Looser shapes, like wide-leg trousers, are a great way to master wearing white, especially during summer. Whether you pair them with a simple T-shirt or layer on a chunky knit, the warm-weather friendly trouser style turns the summery look into a classy trend.

Don't: pair wide-leg culottes with an oversize top. It's important to balance the proportions of this oversize trouser when reaching for a shorter style. A fitting blouse or shirt is more flattering to the eye.

Don't: leave your top loose when opting for a high-waisted style. Show off your waistline and minimize excess bulk with this elegant silhouette by tucking in. Belts are your best friend. Cinch the waist of your favourite wide-leg pants to create a sleeker silhouette.

Don't: opt for bold colours, though there is a time and place for bright suiting. Reach for neutrals like black, navy, or even white. Stick to one eye-catching trend at a time!

Don't: go too oversize. It's important to remember that longer lines doesn't necessarily mean slouchy or boxy!

Don't: be afraid of diving into the hue, head-first. Try styling a look with a blouse and blazer in matching shades of white and cream.

Have fun while you’re at it!
