Trend Forecast 2016

20 January 2016

It’s 2016, people, and boy am I glad to usher in a new season! January marks the beginning of a fresh start, opportunities, goals and looking towards the horizon. I’m not one to follow trends but it’s always important to keep up to date on what’s going on in the fashion world, just to add that extra edge to your wardrobe. I say, keep your personal style but spruce it up a little by incorporating some of the key trends for 2016.

Call me Sporty Spice
Mesh detailing will be in full force this year. Look forward to seeing a lot of mesh detailing on crop tops and dresses this year. This detailing will bring a sports luxe vibe and an edge to your everyday closet. This look may become too mundane from a blogger's perspective, so find ways to incorporate it into the small detailing of your everyday outfits or on an accessory such as a bag. The last thing you want is to look like every other girl around town. Now, that’s a downer!

Speak fluent fashion in denim
Denim gets an update this year with fashionistas packing away their skinnies and embracing cropped, flared and wide leg jeans. It’s 2016 but your jeans will have all the 70s kids green with envy. Dark hues are the most flattering and are way up in terms of being modern and fresh as compared to lighter denims that might come off as slightly tacky.
Pretty in pastels
Pastels are MAJOR this year and for good reason. Not only are pastels fun, they have an elegant sweetness to them that’s undeniable. Prance around the city in these perfect hues. The 2016 #FashionColorReport by Pantone for Spring 2016 announced that Rose Quartz is the official 2016 Pantone colour of the year. Pantone swatches act as the industry standard in fashion, interior design and creative business to match a colour.  Other top hues include Serenity, which is a milky pastel blue shade, and peach echo. With blush tones, yellow, leafy greens and turquoise shades taking their stake on the stage, it’s promising to be a muted and soft year on the clothing front.

Slip into a slinky dress
The slip dress is radical; it’s alluring, intriguing and wired to get you noticed. Spotted numerous times on international style icon Rihanna, the slip dress is the dress to get this year. It can be worn up or down with loads of accessories or with minimal accessories; whatever floats your boat. Best worn with strappy heels for a glamorous, elegant look or go full on sports luxe and wear yours with some designer kicks.

Risky Behaviour with bangs and bold cuts
This year risk takers will be driven to make the cut. Bold hair statements will be a key move for those who want something different and are tired of blending in. Whether you go completely bald, shave the sides of your head or opt for a short pixie cut, this promises to set one apart as a trailblazer. Don’t do it if you suffer from serious FOMO, do it because you’re ready for a change and aren’t driven by emotions.

Get hair colourful
Although the natural look is being embraced more and more, a head full of colourful locks will definitely get heads turning. With an array of wigs and weaves on the market, take a trip on the road less travelled and add some colour to your hair. From pretty pastels, deep reds, bright pinks and even grey, what’s not to love?

It’s a sole thing
Birkenstocks, designer sneakers and brogues are sure to be a hit, worn with dresses, skirts and cropped pants, there’s no shying away from this trend. Creating a laidback or androgynous look, put aside the heels and rock these instead. Designer sneakers are big with millennial’s, gone are the days you see youthful folk in sky high heels out and about as street style takes centre stage.

All about the bling
If big, bold accessories aren’t your thing perhaps you should have stayed in 2015, because this year sees the return of shoulder-grazing earrings- the chandelier kind. Earcuffs are also having their moment and require an attitude to rock them right. Cocktail rings are a great statement piece that will have no one question yours style status. To be all kinds of cool don’t forget to rock your midi rings, which remain all the rage from last year into this year, giving off a cool millennial vibe . Don’t you dare leave your fingers bare!

Drama in the eyes and bold lippie
Finally, full-on colour is the way to go when it comes to makeup. The rebels will love this! The more drama the better the reaction. Hit the right notes by experimenting with bright blue shades and pinks on the eyes. Make a lip statement by sticking to classic deep red hues or going all out and trying unconventional lip colours. It’s all about non-conformity this time around. Do what you will and have fun with it!

Have a fashion-forward year!
